I portrayed an African figure during the emancipation of slavery in the Caribbean but chose to take his complete ownership away from the oppressors. My figure has kept a notion of freedom within his heart despite his external circumstances. In a way, reminiscent of Antigone, natural law prevails in the face of man-made decrees. This figure was bolstered by his own cultural ties and divine connections so that “freedom” was not any coloniser’s gift to him.
