Still I Rise – 2021

Paper and Acrylic on Canvas

I envisioned a concept of hope during an absolutely brutal and inhumane experience- African slavery in the cane fields of Trinidad. I chose to display the resilience of human dignity; our ability to rise out of the horrors that life has too often presented.

My characters are raw in their tortured experience, but strong and brave with a connection to the universe that was never erased. I wanted to convey that no matter what was taken from them, nothing could cut their divine ties with the beauties of creation. The oppressors did not “own” them as they believed. My characters say, “I was never yours. You could neither enslave nor free my heart”.
